Beyond Anova, Basics of Applied Statistics
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (March, 1986)
Average review score:

Great introduction to applied statistics by a great teacherRupert Miller was the best instructor I had as a Stanford graduate student. This book came out of lecture notes that he produced for the required applied statistics course in the Statistics Department at Stanford. I took both quarters of that course. He was an excellent lecturer and writer. The book emphasizes practical aspects of the analysis of variance and deals with issues of robustness and modifications when the basic assumptions fail. It is set out in a very logical manner and deals with ANOVA and regression. It deals with transformations and is unique in its treatment of ratios. Discussion of departures from model assumptions is both useful and insightful. The book was published in 1986 prior to Miller's death and was updated by Brown posthumously in 1996. Brown worked closely with Miller on biostatistical applications at Stanford University. Other related books that Miller wrote or helped with included the Biostatistics Casebook, Survival Analysis (both published by Wiley) and Simultaneous Statistical Inference (published in its second edition by Springer-Verlag).

Beyond the Sublime Porte
Published in Hardcover by AMS Press (June, 1979)
Average review score:

Important historical resourceA reprint of a pioneering book first published in 1931. Dr Miller was able to examine the interior of the Topkapi Palace early in the 20th century, at a time when it retained many original features which have since vanished. She gives extensive details of the Topkapi's architecture and the ways in which the Ottomans used and lived within the palace, reconstructing, for example, the extensive Turkish gardens and also harem life - on which subject so little information exists - with the help of her survey of the surviving buildings. Her work remains a first-rate resource and has formed the basis of every subsequent study of the palace.

The Bible: The Greatest Stories
Published in Hardcover by Abingdon Press (September, 1992)
Average review score:

The Bible, the Greatest StoriesI received this as a gift last year. We read one story every night with our child and he loves it. We also own the Usborne Children's Bible. I rate that a 4/5. I like this bible better because it has comments on the side that give further explanation, the print is large, the stories are not too lengthy and the illustrations attractive.

Big and Little
Published in Hardcover by Greenwillow (May, 1998)
Average review score:

My 19-month old loves this bookMy 19-month old son loves this book. Each spread features a small picture on the left-hand page and a big picture on the right-hand page; both pictures are the same objects and people, but posed differently, showing the contrast of big and little. You'll find feet, hands, balls, boxes, hats, etc. My son studies the pictures, noticing the same objects/people in different poses. Finds it fascinating! This book shows little boys and girls, moms and dads, black, white, and Asian. Nice touch. And just a few words per spread. The pictures mostly do the talking.
All in all, a great book. We checked it out from the library, but we might be buying this one if not just for ourselves, but for friends' toddlers. The author has a few other books we're going to look into, too.

Big and Noisy (Baby's Big Board Books)
Published in Hardcover by Star Bright Books (December, 1997)
Average review score:

Like a little boy's (or girl's!) wish list!"Big and Noisy" is my two-and-a-half year-old son's version of a security blanket right now. He loves the book, loves making the sounds of the machinery, and takes the book everywhere he goes. I didn't realize how much he'd absorbed until a couple of weeks ago, when we took a trip through a section of interstate that was under construction. He could name EVERY piece of heavy machinery that we passed! A very fun book for this toddler age!

Bittersweet Wine
Published in Paperback by Elderberry Press (October, 2002)
Average review score:

Free-verse short poems embracing Western civilizationBittersweet Wine is an extensive compilation of Charles E. Miller's original, free-verse short poems embracing Western civilization and the togetherness and ideals it arises from and stands for. Influences from the Old West seeps through at times, yet the central themes of human life and virtues transcend all time and any setting. Bittersweet Wine is a welcome and much appreciated contribution to any personal or academic poetry collection or reading list. "Glorious was her captain and brave to her heart/Whose saber brightly flashed like his lingering smile./Fallen among those who never again rose,/Immortal - she still loves him, beyond life's breath."
